The Marycrest Alumni Association sadly lost one of its best supporters; Sr. Annette Gallagher was an honorary lifetime member of the alumni board, devoting nearly 60 years to the alumni board. She was a driving force on the board up until 2006 when she decided to step down.
She died Jan. 24, 2010 – 67 years to the day after she entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary. She was 86.
Sr. Annette was known by generations of Marycrest students – giving 42 years to the college, including 19 as a social studies professor and 23 as a reference librarian and Marycrest archivist. She also had served as an academic advisor and the alumni secretary.
Sr. Annette was a graduate of Marycrest, earning her BA degree in education in 1948. She received her MA in history from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in 1950, and a PhD from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 1970.
During her teaching career at Marycrest, she was a history and current affairs teacher – well known for her Contemporary Affairs class. Students and fellow sisters, who gathered at her memorial in Davenport, recalled fondly how she taught them all the importance of being aware of the world around them, assigning them to read Time Magazine weekly.
The alumni board has long missed her attention to detail as well as her handwritten notes – usually on small bits of paper – about alumni and news about their lives. She was an irreplaceable source of knowledge about alumni and Marycrest history.
May she rest in peace. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.
